Top 5 Skincare Mistakes

Top 5 Skincare Mistakes
Most of us have a skincare routine that we repeat daily or nightly. We know that we should be caring for our skin, but no matter how good our intentions are, we often sabotage our own efforts without knowing it. Skincare mistakes happen, but it’s never too late to correct an old habit! Here are Brilliance New York’s Top 5 Skin Care Mistakes and how to correct them.

Leaving your skin bare for too long after cleansing

The whole purpose of your cleansing-toning-moisturizing routine is to keep your skin hydrated and yes, moisturized! A common skincare mistake that we see is leaving your face bare for too long after cleansing. Your facial routine should be done quickly in order to prevent your skin from drying out before you’ve had the opportunity to lock in enough moisture. You can avoid this skincare mistake by applying cleaners and toners within 60 seconds of each other before moisturizing.

Over-Exfoliating

You may think that exfoliating every day is going to keep the dead cells at bay, but in fact, you might be doing more harm than good. Exfoliating too often or using too many exfoliating products can strip your skin of moisture and healthy cells! This is harsh and can actually cause more damage to your skin cells. Avoid this mistake by exfoliating two or three times a week at most!

Not wearing enough sunscreen

The sun has damaging UV rays that can take a toll on your skincare routine. Not wearing enough sunscreen, or not wearing any at all, is one of the biggest skincare mistakes that you can make. Apply about three to four ounces of sunscreen daily.

Washing your skin with a soap bar

Soap bars have a higher pH than facial washes and scrubs that are specifically meant for washing your face. This is because of the binding materials that hold bars of soap together. Soap bars strip your skin of natural oils and can cause a pH imbalance that results in severe dryness. Instead, use a gentle cleanser like our Rose Hip Cleanser that nourishes and balances your pH balance.

Not applying your products in the correct order

When you are going through your daily skincare routine, you should always apply the products that have the lightest formulas first, regardless of the active ingredients. This is a common skincare mistake that can cause your products to be less effective than they could be because the heavier formulas will block your pores and make it harder for those formulas to penetrate the skin.
